Americans have spoken and the consensus is out: improving education is a community responsibility. Today, fewer Americans are likely to earn a diploma than their parents, a distinction not shared by any other industrialized country.

On June 21st, known as the longest day of the year, and now United Way’s Day of Action, United Way will launch an ambitious goal to recruit one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors across America. There is something for everyone with the passion and commitment to get things done.

United Way is working to end the American education crisis, and has a goal to cut the number of high school dropouts in half by 2018.  United Way of Bay County invests 40% of our resources to help youth programs, such as the Literacy Council Summer Tutoring Program.  This program pairs volunteers with students in kindergarten through fourth grade.

The goal: Build basic math and reading skills for students struggling to keep up in school.  A child who completes this program raises their reading/math skill levels by an average of one grade.

United Way of Bay County is doing our part by advocating for volunteers to help the Summer Tutoring Program.

Over 100 volunteers are needed to ensure that each child receives this needed service.

Please call Literacy Council of Bay County 989.686.8700 or visit unitedwaybaycounty.org to sign up!

Sometimes kids just need someone who believes in them. Join United Way and come together with friends, family, and neighbors to show the power of Living United. Volunteer reading, tutoring or mentoring one hour each week can significantly change the life of a young person. If one million of us do it, it will change America.
