Dr. Robert and Helen Lee are challenging local donors to help Bay County children through United Way. They will match dollar for dollar, every donation up to $10,000 to United Way’s Back to School Clothing program.
Every year thousands of young children in Bay County who live in poverty go back to school in worn out clothing and shoes that have holes in them or do not fit. United Way of Bay County responds to this need with its Back to School Clothing Program. The program aims to provide 1,200 children with a new outfit, shoes, and undergarments for school.
Applications to United Way this year are up 41% from last year.
“Adults often underestimate the impact new school clothing has on kids,” states Ann Lingle, senior vice president at Independent Bank and United Way campaign chair.
“It means a lot to the kids to show up in fresh, clean clothes — it means they don’t have to be shy or embarrassed on the first day and can pay attention to what they are learning,” she said.
The average cost to sponsor a child is $65 and donations will be accepted through August 30th.
